Lucille Silvia Derbez Amézquita, better known as Silvia Derbez (March 8, 1932 – April 6, 2002) was a Mexican film and television actress. She competed in Miss Mexico 1952 where she came in 4th place.

Derbez was born in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, the daughter of María de la Luz Amézquita and French-born businessman Marcel Derbez Gilly. She debuted in Mexican film as a teenager, participating in her first movie at the age of 15, when she acted in La Novia del Mar (Girlfriend of the Sea), filmed in 1947.[citation needed]
In 1948, she participated in a classic of Mexican cinema: Allá en el Rancho Grande (Out on the Big Ranch). She was in three more movies before the decade of the 1940s had ended, including the classic cabaretera film noir Salón México.[citation needed]
Derbez became a celebrity, both nationally and internationally, during the 1950s, an era in which she recorded sixteen films. Between 1951 and 1954, Derbez retired from filming, but she was in ten movies from 1954 to 1956.[citation needed]
With television becoming popular in Mexico, Derbez was signed by Televisa to play «Nora» in the 1958 soap opera, Senda prohibida (Forbidden Way). In 1959, Derbez got the title role in another soap opera, Elisa.[citation needed]
Derbez acted in seventeen telenovelas during the 1960s, many of them in which she starred. Among the soap operas she made during that decade was Maria Isabel I, where she once again played the title role. She returned to cinema in 1969, participating in three movies between then and 1970.[citation needed]
During the 1970s, her work rate on television slowed slightly. She made twelve telenovelas during that time. Among the telenovelas that she participated in was 1970’s Angelitos negros (Black Angels), as a nanny. She also acted in 1971’s El derecho de los hijos (Your Children’s Rights) and La Recogida (which loosely translates to The Picked up Woman). In 1975, she acted in a movie, El Andariego (The Walker).[citation needed]
As Derbez began to age, her work rate numbers began to decline, and during the 1980s, she acted in only six telenovelas and four movies. In 1986, her husband, Eugenio González Salas, a publicist, died. Nevertheless, Derbez recovered from that personal loss and participated in one of Latin America’s most famed telenovelas of all time, Simplemente Maria, in 1989. In Simplemente Maria, Derbez acted alongside Victoria Ruffo, who would soon become her daughter in law. Simplemente Maria’s 1989 version was popular in countries such as Puerto Rico and Venezuela. During the 1990s, Derbez’s son Eugenio Derbez became famous as a television comedian. He and Ruffo got married.[citation needed]
Derbez made three movies during the early 1990s, including 1993’s Zapatos Viejos (Old Shoes), where she acted alongside singer Gloria Trevi. In 1994, Derbez was in Prisionera de Amor (Prisoner of Love), and in 1995, she played «Milagros» in Lazos de Amor. Those two soap operas became popular among Hispanic viewers in the United States.[citation needed]
Derbez once again returned to cinema acting after Prisionera de Amor and Lazos de Amor, acting in three movies before returning to television as «Leonor» in Los hijos de nadie (Nobody’s Children). In 1998, she participated in another highly acclaimed Mexican telenovela, La usurpadora (The supplanter), which starred Gabriela Spanic. Her last work as an actress came in 2001’s version of Caridad Bravo Adams’ La intrusa (The Intruder).[citation needed]

During the early 1980s, Derbez was a regular in Cachún cachún ra ra!, a Mexican television show. He also participated in En Familia con Chabelo, a children’s television show.[citation needed]
In 1988, he got his first recurring television position when he played a number of roles in a comedy show called Anabel. Derbez kept making movies during the 1990s. In 1992 he began hosting the variety show Al Derecho y al Derbez.[citation needed]
In 1997, Derbez made his directing debut in a soap opera named No Tengo Madre. In 1999 Derbez started a comedy show, Derbez en Cuando. Derbez appeared in Carita de ángel in 2000. He also starred that year in Cómplices al Rescate} (‘Accomplices to the Rescue’). In 2003 he produced a television series named XHDRBZ. He later produced Hospital el Paisa (‘Countrymen Hospital’), Vecinos (‘Neighbors’), and in 2009 Ellas son… la alegría del hogar. He was the leading man in La familia P. Luche.[citation needed]

In 2002, Derbez and Florinda Meza co-created a sitcom named XHDRBZ, which marked his debut as a producer. Also in 2002, Derbez co-created, co-directed, and starred in the family sitcom La familia P. Luche, which gained Derbez further recognition amongst the Mexican and Latin community.

In 2011, Derbez starred in Adam Sandler’s Jack and Jill as Felipe starring with Adam Sandler, Katie Holmes and Al Pacino; he also starred in Girl In Progress, with Eva Mendes, also directed by Patricia Riggen. Eugenio also starred in the CBS sitcom Rob! and on Broadway in Latinologues at the Helen Hayes Theater.[citation needed]
Derbez starred in Sony’s Miracles from Heaven, with Jennifer Garner (directed by Patricia Riggen), and he voiced the role of Rico in the animated feature Underdogs, directed by Juan J. Campanella.
In 2013, Derbez starred in and directed Instructions Not Included[3] the most successful Spanish-language film in the U.S. and worldwide, which broke numerous box office records, earning over $100 million. The Spanish-language comedy-drama became a surprise $44 million hit in the U.S., and the third highest-grossing film ($46 million) of the year in Mexico (only Despicable Me and Iron Man sequels did better).[4]
In 2016, Derbez wrapped production on the Lionsgate/Pantelion feature How to Be a Latin Lover in which he starred with Salma Hayek, Rob Lowe, Kristen Bell, Raquel Welch, Rob Riggle, Linda Lavin and Rob Huebel. It was written by Chris Spain and Jon Zack and directed by Ken Marino. The film, produced by Derbez and his producing partner Ben Odell, was released in the U.S. on April 28, 2017, and May 5, 2017, in Mexico.[citation needed]

Derbez is a partner of 3pas Studios with producer Ben Odell.[5][6]
In 2021, via 3Pas Studios, he inked a first look deal with Univision,[7] and he and Odell were executive producers on behalf of 3Pas Studios of the 2021 television series Acapulco, which stars Derbez.[6] He appeared in the Academy Award-winning Apple TV+ film CODA, which won him, along with the rest of the cast, the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. In 2022 he started as the main character in the movie The Valet as Antonio Flores and will be participating in the movie based in the International best selling book Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of The Universe.

Eugenio Derbez is one of Mexico’s more successful comedic actors and directors. He was recognized by Variety in 2014 as the #1 most influential Latin American male in the world. On March 10, 2016, Derbez unveiled his star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. The ceremony was attended by thousands of fans.[8]
In 2014, following the success of Instructions Not Included, Derbez partnered with former Pantelion President of Production Benjamin Odell to create 3Pas Studios, his film production company in Los Angeles.

Derbez was born in Mexico City, the son of actress Silvia Derbez and publicist Eugenio González Salas. Eugenio resides in Los Angeles with his family. Derbez is married to Alessandra Rosaldo, actress, model, and former Sentidos Opuestos singer.[9] He is father to Mexican comedic actress Aislinn Derbez (her mother is Gabriela Michel), Mexican actor and singer Vadhir Derbez (his mother is Silvana Prince), Mexican actor José Eduardo Derbez (his mother is actress Victoria Ruffo) and Aitana Derbez (her mother is Alessandra Rosaldo). He is a vegetarian. He has a bulldog named Fiona.[10]
